Greenland dead ahead.... (about 71 North 52 West).

Well above the arctic circle off the west coast of Greenland Canadian Pacific ore carrier the W.C.Van Horne makes a carefull approach to the Black Angel Mine.

The lead and zinc ore was mined throughout the year, but only for a couple of months in high summer could a ship of this size get in to carry out the product.

The waters are strewn with ice calved from glaciers that run down to the sea. The W.C.VanHorne was not ice re-inforced, so had to pick her way in very carefully.

Picking up the Elbe pilot via helicopter.

A helicopter drop on the cluttered deck of a chemical tanker can be a very tricky manouvre.

Not only does the pilot need to stay well clear of all the obstructions both on and above deck, but he needs to remember those tanks could be filled with anything from naptha to concentrated caustic soda.

Port Stanley Harbour, the Falkland Islands in 1982. The fireworks are over and the bridge is quiet. We were swinging around the hook in the aftermath of the war.

Our class three chemical tanker was used to carry fresh water to our sister ship that was acting as a water carrier for the task force.
